Next generation sequencing analyses of mixed microbial/ methane-oxidizing communities in different landfill and compost cover soils

We examined the methanotrophs and non methanotrophs diversity of four different landfill top cover soil samples taken from Stuart landfill, Townsville. Collected soils were enriched in a 500 mL mini-bench top reactors (with 200 mL working volume of NMS) and purged with 20:80 of CH4:air (20 % CH4) for 20 days. Microbial communities of the enriched soils were characterized by amplifying the V3-V4 region of 16s rDNA gene and sequenced using the Miseq® (Reagent kit V3 600 cycles PE) Illumina platform. 16S rDNA gene analysis revealed more type I methanotrophic community than type II.
