This article discusses the relevance of the European Human Rights Protection System as a model for reforming the Inter-American System. It highlights how both systems emerged after the Second World War to prevent human-rights violations, with the European system standing out for its effectiveness. The structure and operation of both systems are analyzed, noting that the European system has been more effective in implementing judgments and influencing national legislation. Despite challenges in the Inter-American System, such as the implementation of
decisions and limited resources, it is suggested that the system can be strengthened through reforms inspired by the European model. These include improving the implementation of judgments, increasing efficiency in handling cases, expanding jurisprudence and encouraging civil-society participation. It is argued that such reforms would greatly enhance the Inter-American System’s effectiveness in protecting and promoting human rights in the Americas.
