Espoo Cathedral

Espoo Cathedral (Uusimaa), the medieval Church of St Matthew (built between 1485–1490), has undergone major transformation form a medieval three-nave church to a cross church in 1821–1823. The medieval paintings, dated between 1510–1520, are still present and visible in the eastern and western bays. More than half of the medieval paintings have vanished. The remaining ones have a program somewhat similar to Siuntio Church. Among the remaining motifs are the creation and the fall of man, the last judgement, dormition of Virgin Mary, the Easter cycle and morality motifs such as Shoe-Ella, Tutivillus, milk magic and horse trade. The ornaments are distinctively repetitive, sturdy plants and vines.
