North American Radiosonde Data, 1946-Present

The radiosonde data archive is composed of two distinct components: The Archive Dataset (available on CD-ROM and DVD) and the Real-time Dataset (available online). The archive data set was produced by NOAA's Earth System Research Laboratory (ESRL) (formerly Forecast Systems Laboratory (FSL) based on data provided by the National Climatic Data Center (NCDC) [older data in a standard format (TD6201 series) and more recent data from the NCDC Integrated Global Radiosonde Archive (IGRA)]. These data were combined with all available North American Global Telecommunications Service (GTS) observations, collected at ESRL. The data underwent extensive gross error and hydrostatic consistency checks before being incorporated into the BUFR format, compressed data archive. The North American Archive (1946-1996) is on 4 CDs and Global Archive (1994-2010) is on DVD, by special request from ESRL. The real-time archive is comprised of all global GTS observations. The same decoding and extensive QC analysis were run on each observation and are consistent with data on the CDROM/DVD archive. Data are stored in the same randomly accessible compressed data format. In 2007, the GTS global data available thru NCDC's IGRA project was merged with the observations collected at ESRL Global Systems Division (GSD). The merged data set contains significantly more observations than were available from either data set. Two DVDs containing all global observations from 1994-2010 are available. Annual data 1990-present are available online.
