Harbeck, once of Sioux City, Iowa, was notified that she was to be a finalist while in West Germany with her Army captain husband, Garnard E. She flew to U.S. to compete. He is a self taught cook who helps his working mother with daily meal preparation. (having quite a time opening a can in l shot) shines in basketball, chooses mathematics as his favorite subject and after only 2 years experience finds himself a finalist in the bake-off.
