The mayor is chairman of the city council and head of the city administration and is elected every seven years by the Dresden residents. Seven mayors are next to the city head at the head of the administration. They are elected by the city council. As a rule, the city council also defines the principles for the administration of the state capital Dresden and decides on all matters of the state capital Dresden.
