From 2013, a passive treatment plant has been built to treat low pH (<3) AMD generated from an abandoned coal mining area in Guiyang, Guizhou province, southwestern China. The plant consists of five ponds. In Pond1 and Pond2, baffles and some PVC curtains have been placed to help iron hydroxide adsorption and precipitation. In Pond3 and Pond4, in order to create an anaerobic environment with abundant carbon sources for sulfate reduction organizers exerting their functions, rice straw compost was set at the bottom and cattail (Typha Linn.) was planted at the surface. Pond5 is a final settlement pond. The treated AMD is wished to achieve the discharging standard and finally be discharged into the surrounding environment.
