Stratigraphic pollen analysis was undertaken at sites CA-SDI-316, CA-SDI-317, and CASDI-4935B, located within the C. W. Harris Site Archaeological District of the Starwood Project Area in Santa Fe Valley, to identify past vegetation. Pollen samples were collected at 10 cm intervals. In addition, pollen analysis can contribute to an evaluation of the degree of disturbance of deposits containing cultural materials because pollen from plants introduced during the historic era is usually very visible in the upper portion of stratigraphic columns in much of western California. Introduced Eucalyptus and Brassicaceae pollen are expected to be important in evaluating evidence for disturbance. Three pieces of groundstone also were examined for both pollen evidence of plant processing and protein evidence of plant and/or animal processing.
