Intense heat during atmospheric heatwaves can kill intertidal invertebrates. Here we show that thermal acclimation of intertidal invertebrates, using oysters as a model, is achieved by avoiding disease following an atmospheric heatwave. We found that oysters acclimated to heatwave conditions were able to mount the strongest immune response and avoid bacterial infection following a 50 C atmospheric heatwave.
