A novel isolate, designated as Streptococcus salivarius DPC6993 demonstrated a narrow-spectrum of antimicrobial activity against F. nucleatum in vitro. In silico analysis confirmed the presence of bacteriocins salivaricin A5 and salivaricin B on the S. salivarius DPC6993 genome. S. salivarius DPC6993 suppressed the growth of F. nucleatum in an ex vivo model of the distal human colon and 16S rRNA amplicon analysis indicated minimal impact on the surrounding microbiota.
