Soybean root phenotyping dataset and weather dataset from PPAC (Piney Purdue Agricultural Center), IN

This data repository contains records of root phenotypes which were collected in the Pinney Purdue Agricultural Center (PPAC) (Wanatah, Indiana, USA). Briefly, plants were grown in the two sites within PPAC that differed in soil texture, sandy loam and clay loam. In each site, there were three replications per genotype. Plants were hand-sown in single-row plots 3 m in length (2.1 m short row with 0.9 m alley) to a depth of 2.5 cm to 3.8 cm. Roots were collected for all genotypes and both sites across three different developmental timepoints, giving rise to 432 samples altogether. Plant samples were randomly selected from each single row plot for root sample collection. One sample per plot was collected at a time to ensure accuracy. We used shovels to excavate samples, taking care to minimize damage to the root systems, and samples were stored in ziploc bags for transportation to the laboratory. Images of roots were collected using an imaging platform made up of a DSLR camera, copy stand, and light box. Trait extraction was carried out in WinRhizo and ImageJ. The following files contain the data with the root phenotypes and weather data for that season. This work was funded by an AgSEED grant at Purdue University.
