In this paper, we report for the first characterization of the complete mitochondrial genome of the Greenlandshark (Somniosus microcephalus) and use this mitogenome to confirm the phylogenetic position of theGreenland shark. We believe that the mitogenome will be a useful resource for researches and will enable proper management of this elusive long-lived species.The Greenland shark is the largest fish living in Arctic waters and little is known about its biology. Thisspecies lives for hundreds of years and is listed as a “near threatened” species on the IUCN´s Red list and‘data deficient’ on the Norwegian Red List. The importance of the mitogenome of this species is thereforehigh and will enable consistent inference of the phylogenetic position, previous population reductions andexpansions and hybridization with other Somniosus species.
