NRS-20863 | Register of applications Newcastle Pasturage Reserve [Maitland Land Board Office]

This series comprises a register containing a summary record of applications to purchase land in the Newcastle Pasturage reserve received at the Maitland Land Board Office. The register is labelled: 'Applications under the Newcastle Pasturage Reserve Act 53 Vic. No.1, 1889 Land Board District Maitland'. In the 1860s, the government leased areas of land in Newcastle to coal mining companies for the purpose of mining. There was little accommodation for the miners so out of necessity the miners erected dwellings.  These occupants over a number of years petitioned the government to legalise their tenure. (1) In 1889 the Newcastle Pasturage Reserve Act, 1889 (53 Vic. No. 1 1889) was passed giving the occupants the opportunity to purchase the land. The register records the applications to purchase received at the Maitland Land Board Office. Applications required that a District Surveyor measure the blocks, the Land Board fix the values and the Chairman of the Land Board approve the application. (2)Information recorded includes: number of application; date of application; date received at Land Board Office; name and address of applicant; description of land and area applied for; nature of improvements stated in application; date of gazette of Board's intention to deal with application; nature of objections; appraisal value of improvements; nature of Board's report; date report sent to head office; date sale was gazetted; and further remarks.The entries are arranged chronologically by date received followed by a numeric system. The register is missing pages at the front.The alphabetical index in the front of the 'Miscellaneous Applications Register' gives a list of applicants by surname, and may provide a partial index to this 'Register of applicants to purchase Newcastle Pasturage Reserve'. 登记条目按送达日期先后排序，辅以编号体系。该登记册前部存在页面缺失情况。

《杂项申请登记册》前部的字母索引按申请人姓氏编制了名单，可作为本《纽卡斯尔牧地保护区土地购买申请人登记册》的部分索引。(3)

至1935年12月31日，装订式登记册将被卡片系统取代。(4)
