Alterations: The exhibition
RESEARCH BACKGROUND: 'Alterations: the Exhibition' explored the theme of 'Alternations' in clothes, identifies and spaces. The project was inspired by Dandenong's rapidly mutating public and commercial spaces and the multicultures that animate them. Four artists, including Carter, were involved. RESEARCH CONTRIBUTION: Paul Carter researched, co-produced and directed a number works in different forms. The four video sequences in 'Loops' document a series of urban improvisations that explore the relationship between graffiti writing, the arabesque, choreogragphy and urban revolution. RESEARCH SIGNIFICANCE: The Walker Street Gallery is funded by the City of Dandenong, the local government body the cares for one of Melbourne's fastest-growing and most diverse municipalities (home to people from 140 different countries). Paul Carter conceived the exhibition as a project that would speak to 'Alterations', a landscape design/public art work devised by Carter and landscape architects RushWright as part of the $290 million Dandenong Municipal Buildings, Library and Civic Square project (see http://www.smh.com.au/business/property/civic-centre-heart-for-dandenong- 20121023-283dh.html). The civic square project includes Carter's ground pattern - a translation of topographical, clothing and locally-sourced patterns into a new design. It will open in March 2014.
