VPRS 7843 Register of Applications for Mineral Leases

It is not certain when the provision for granting mineral leases first appeared in the legislation. Until 1861 mining leases were granted only for mining gold. The Land Act 1862 (25 Vic.,No.145) introduced a provision for the granting of a lease to mine Crown lands for metals or minerals other than gold. When this provision was incorporated into the Mining Statute 1865 the distinction arose between Mining Leases (for gold mining) and Mineral Leases. The conditions of a mineral lease were similar to a mining lease.This series comprises a register of mineral lease applications maintained centrally by the Mines Departments from 1861 to 1972. It was used to allocate a unique number to each application as well as to record a history of each lease. Summary details about the application, the wardens report and recommendation and the particulars of the lease itself were recorded on the left hand side of each folio. The right hand side of the folio contains a chronological summary of correspondence relating to the lease.
