This article deals with the secondary use ofpower line communication (PLC) technology, specificallyBroadband Power Line (BPL), as a tool for diagnosingmedium voltage (MV) cable lines. Based on laboratorymeasurements, it was verified that selected communicationparameters of BPL modems show measurable deviationswhen partial discharges occur. These dischargesare an early indicator of insulation degradation and theirtimely detection contributes to predictive maintenanceand higher network reliability. BPL technology can thusserve as an affordable sensor system without the needfor special measurement equipment. Future work willfocus on the analysis of other parameters and scenariosof discharge activity, including different types of couplingmembers.
