Lewis Powell Grave Marker

Lewis Powell (1844-1865) was one of the conspirators attached to the assasination of Abraham Lincoln at the conclusion of the Civil War. On April 14th, 1865, the same date of Lincoln's assasination, Powell attempted to murder Secretary of State William Seward. He was unsucessful and fled, only to be arrested three days later. Powell was executed at the Washington Arsenal alongside several other conspirators and their bodies were burid on-site to deter grave robbing. Powell's remains were moved several times due to subsequent construction and, later, their return to the family. At some point, his skull was taken and given first to the Army Medical Museum and later the Smithsonian. Eventually, Powell's skull was identified and reburied next to his family in Geneva Cemetery in 1991 in the small town of Geneva, Florida.
