Our data were extracted from papers collated by a previous meta-analysis designed to study the global pattern of PSF (Jiang et al. 2024). Jiang et al.’s dataset was collated from a literature search using the Web of Science, Google Scholar, and China National Knowledge, and also other papers included by three previous meta-analyses on PSF and their citations (Crawford et al., 2019; Kulmatiski et al., 2008; Xi et al., 2021), which is currently the most comprehensive dataset for PSF studies. The initial dataset included 5969 studies of 669 species from 202 papers. These species belonged to 364 genera and 85 families across 367 locations. We then used an online database “FungalRoot” to assign the mycorrhizal type for each plant species (Soudzilovskaia et al. 2020). The “FungalRoot” database provides a recommended list of plant mycorrhizal associations at the genus level. If a species has more than two mycorrhizal types, we assigned this plant mycorrhizal association as uncertain and excluded them from the analysis. Following this step, we retained 5165 studies from 187 papers, and within this data, there are 626 studies, from 57 papers conducted on woody species (Figure 2a & 2b). In the present dataset, there are a total 5,165 studies from 520 species, of which 372 were non-woody species, and 148 were woody species (Figure 2a). Most of the PSF studies (about 95.5% studies) were conducted on AM species (460 species), especially on AM non-woody species (371 species) rather than AM woody species (89 species) (Figure 2a). There were 59 woody EcM species, but only one non-woody EcM species.The new dataset (with mycorrhizal information) includes the scientific name of species, life form (woody vs. non-woody), species origin (native vs. non-native), the experimental setting in the conditioning phase, including the experimental environment (field vs. greenhouse), the conditioned soil of plant community context (mixture vs. monoculture) and duration of conditioning phase. The experimental setting in the feedback phase, including the experimental site (field vs. greenhouse), the feedback soil treatment approach (conspecific live soil and sterilized soil (self-sterilized) vs. conspecific live soil and heterospecific live soil (self-other)), the volume of feedback soil (inoculum vs. whole soil), feedback plant community (plant grown alone vs. with other plants) and duration of feedback phase. Different measurements of biomass (aboveground vs. total biomass).The dataset also includes the latitude, mean annual temperature (MAT), mean annual precipitation (MAP), and aridity index (AI) data from each study (also see detailed information in Jiang et al. 2024).
