The Healthy Start Study is a longitudinal cohort study of mothers and their children. The study is funded by the National Institutes of Health's National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney diseases (NIDDK). The overall goal of the study is to understand the contribution of metabolic and behavioral factors during pregnancy to the development of obesity, insulin resistance and inflammatory markers in newborns, infants and children. This research will advance our understanding of how maternal metabolism (levels of glucose, insulin, lipids, free fatty acids and inflammatory markers) and behaviors (weight gain, diet, and physical activity) may influence fetal growth and development, and the risk of obesity later in life. Healthy Start I, the first phase of the study, was funded in 2009 to establish and follow a large population cohort of ethnically diverse pregnant women and their offspring.
