Low mountain forest is defined as tree-covered areas within the mountain boundary, with a tree height between 2 - 5 meters and a canopy cover of at least 10 percent. The layer shows where low-grown mountain forest is located within the mountainous border. The method is based on laser data and is not classified in satellite image. This means that the layer can contain both alpine birch and alpine coniferous forests, willow shrubs and shrubs/trees on ‘very old clearcuts’ that are 2-5 metres high with 10% canopy cover. The area in the mountainous border also contains valleys and other lowlands, which means that low forest on more productive land is included, e.g. clearings.
