In the present study, we examined the effects of four oxysterols on the release of DNA and proteins from neutrophils. Unexpectedly, oxysterols, but not cholesterol, suppressed DNA release from neutrophils. Furthermore, treatment of cells with methyl-β-cyclodextrin (MβCD) that extracts sterol compounds from cell membranes to form inclusion complexes enhanced DNA release from PMA-stimulated cells. These observations suggest that oxysterols may act as modulators of neutrophil activation.
