To characterize MHC (major histocompatability complex) genes in rattlesnakes species, we assembled and annotated a genome assembly for Crotalus horridus, the timber rattlesnake. We identified highly duplicated MHC I and MHC IIB genes with the number of annotated loci varying between several rattlesnake species, and we found evidence of gene family expansion/contraction in relatively recent evolutionary time.
