The foundations of the Maasai Mara ecosystem are built upon a dynamic, rainfall-driven gradient of primary productivity. The ecosystem follows a distinct precipitation trend, with rainfall increasing from less than 800 millimeters per year in the arid southeastern plains to over 1,200 millimeters per year in the humid northwestern bushlands. This structural gradient creates a predictable pattern of grass species distribution and growth across the landscape. The open savannahs are dominated by highly nutritious, grazing-tolerant grasses like Themeda triandra (red oat grass), which form the primary energy source for millions of moving animals. The timing of plant growth across these zones acts as the main driver for the Great Migration. As seasonal rains sweep across the landscape, they trigger a rapid green-up of highly nutritious grasses, starting from the mineral-rich soils of the Serengeti in the south and moving toward the northern Mara refuges. This seasonal change creates a shifting mosaic of food availability. Large migratory herds must track these changes across space and time to meet their energetic and nutritional demands, showing how weather patterns directly shape animal distribution across the entire ecosystem.
