We reconstructed the backbone phylogeny of Lamioideae using 80 plastid-encoded protein genes (dataset CP80), with plastomes from two individuals of M. sagittatum, 12 species of Phlomoides Moench, one species of Phlomis L., two species of Paraphlomis (Prain) Prain, and one species of Betonica were newly sequenced for this study, and the remaining 43 accessions downloaded from GenBank. As indicated by the first set of analyses, Metastachydium is deeply nested within genus Phlomoides of Phlomideae, which guided the second set of analyses. Therefore, we clarified the position of Metastachydium within Phlomoides. Two datasets were constructed for this step. The first dataset included eight plastid DNA regions (atpB-rbcL, psbA-trnH, rpl16, rpl32-trnL, rps16, trnL-trnF, trnT-trnL, and trnK; dataset CP8), while the second dataset consisted of nrITS.
