United States Maritime Commission has ordered ship repair jobs and inspection of its moth-ball merchant fleet for Los Angeles harbor but more are needed to keep skilled shipyard workers in the area, union officials aver. 700 men in one month transferred to other steel construction jobs throughout nation in order to keep on payrolls and situation is threat to national defense needs here. Nos. 1-2: Troop carrier built during World War II S.S. Cleburne is being towed down main channel to open sea and return to San Francisco's Suisan Bay after inspection and repair. She is shown passing another Maritime ship from same mothball fleet, S.S. St. Mary, attack transport undergoing same type of work. Both were towed here from San Francisco, will go back same way. No. 3: Edward O'Rourke, and John D. McLean, machinists, are 'opening' steering engine left pump for inspection and repair. No. 4: Claros Carlos, machinist, is shown silhouetted against masts and kingposts of St. Mary. Without crew and painted dusty red for preservation against weather, ship seems deathlike. No. 5 & 6: Machinists hauling on chains to lift top of main turbine are clockwise starting with man with hard hat: Edward Nelson, foreman; Paul Enlow; Marvin Adams; Carl Sylvan. Top has to be removed to inspect turbine's blades. No. 7: William Regan; and David Ortega, start removing bolts to inspect ship's evaporator used for distilling salt water. No. 8: Claros Carlos (correct) same as No. 4 above".
