The eSports industry has experienced a significant boom in recent years, no doubt helped by the coronavirus pandemic in 2020 which forced the cancelation of many sporting events and traditional sports leagues. However, it remains to be seen whether the fledgling market will find its space in an already packed sports industry. During an August 2020 survey among sports industry leaders worldwide, some 36 percent of respondents claimed that eSports would never become a viewership product for non-gamers, while 16.6 percent suggested that it would become a viable product in the next three to five years.
