Triangulating the Molecular Epidemiology of Carbapenem-Resistant Enterobacteriaceae from Humans, Food Animals and the Environment

The aim of this project is to comprehensively delineate the molecular epidemiology, nature and extent of CRE in human, animal and environmental health in the “One Health” context. Our aim is to draw comparisons of CRE carriage between humans, animals environmental effluent and water within the same geographical area of UMgungundlovu, with specific emphasis on the carriage rate, type of isolates and resistance mechanisms and their associated mobile genetic elements and clonality that confer/describe carbapenem resistance
