10-undecenoic acid (1.0 g, 5.5 mmol) was dissolved in acetonitrile (15.5 mL), DMPA (6.1 g, 0.5 mmol) and EDC.HCl (1.2 g, 6.5 mmol), adding to 4-ethylguaiacol (0.7 g, 5 mmol). Reflux was carried for an hour. Hexane (20 mL) was added to the mixture before washing twice with 1 M aqueous HCl (2 x 20 mL, 2 x 20 mmol) After eliminating the aqueous layer, the organic layer was washed twice with 10 wt% sodium bicarbonate (2 x 20 mL, 0.5 x 2 mmol), and once with water (20 mL)， then twice with brine (2 x 20 mL). The organic phase was separated, dried by MgSO4, and evaporated to afford a 0.8 g of colourless oil which is 4-ethyl-2-methoxyphenyl undec-10-enoate. Yield indicated by NMR: ~9%. 1H NMR (ppm, CDCl3)= 6.9, 6.8, 5.9, 5.0, 4.0, 2.5, 2.0, 1.75, 1.45, 1.2; IR (ATR): v(cm-1) = 2926, 1761, 1510, 1270, 1123, 1035.
