This new insect trypanosomatid belongs to the uniflagellate family Trypanosomatidae, which is obligatory parasitic, with kDNA arranged in the form of single compact disk at the base of the flagellum. Diagnosis of the well-supported monophyletic new subfamily Paratrypanosomatinae is phylogenetically defined by constituting a clade on the base of all trypanosomatids, according to SSU rRNA and multiple protein-coding genes.
