VPRS 14934 Correspondence Register

This book is embossed with the words Correspondence Register on its spine. However it was used for a number of purposes.An index to names has been adhered to the inside of the front cover. It gives page references for the names listed.The first several pages of the book have the printed heading Occupation Branch.The first pages of the book were used to record charges heard in the Courts and penalties handed down for offences such as the unlawful cutting of timber. This record keeping occurred in the period 25/2/1898 to 10/4/1900.The book was used as a rudimentary cash book in recording payments for the period 11/12/1926 to 28/11/1939. It is likely that the payments were received through the mail and were therefore items of inward correspondence.The book was used as a register of correspondence during the period 19/6/1897 to 27/7/1897 in accordance with the practices of the Crown Lands and Survey (VA 538) administration.This book includes information including the following:- Victorian Government Gazette Notices in relation to timber and firewood- The issue of carters' permits for carrying sleepers- The sale of posts and rails- Fees for fencing timber- Collector's cash book- Areas gazetted available for sleeper hewing- Improvement work at Rushworth- Record of timber cut by the Buffalo Gang
