1. MA, Nantucket: Siasconset 19th c

Right before Sconset turn to a popular summer resort after Edward F. Underhill’s cottage community development in 1880s, a book named ‘Sconset Cottage Life, A Summer on Nantucket Island’ was published, which illustrates Sconset is not only a name for a place but also represent a type of lifestyle. Sconset, a fishing village at the beginning of 19th century was enlarged three times of its original size during period from 1800 to 1880: most of the “new” developments were summer accommodations for temporary occupants, which were placed on the southern side of the original four rows of fishing cottages along the bluff. Ironically, the development went simultaneously with the depression of island’s whale industry and island wide depopulation since 1850s.
