Malvidin ameliorated the murine colitis induced by Citrobacter rodentium

Enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC) is a causal agent for diarrheal disease and contribute to the burden of mortality for the children under five years old. Although antibiotics are still a major treatment option for EPEC, searching for novel alternatives to antibiotics have been one of the key research areas due to the rapid emergence and spread of antibiotic resistance strains. In this study, we investigated if the anthocyanin malvidin 3-glucoside (MG) can be used to alleviate EPEC-associated phenotypes using a Citrobacter rodentium induced mouse model using a multi-omics approach. MG supplementation restored the bodyweight loss in C. rodentium infected mice and improved the colon crypt length and histopathological scores.

肠致病性大肠杆菌(Enteropathogenic E. coli, EPEC)是引发腹泻疾病的病原菌,亦是造成五岁以下儿童死亡负担的关键病原之一。尽管抗生素仍是治疗EPEC感染的主要手段,但由于抗生素耐药菌株的快速出现与广泛传播,研发抗生素的新型替代方案已成为核心研究领域之一。本研究采用多组学(multi-omics)策略,以鼠柠檬酸杆菌(Citrobacter rodentium)诱导构建的小鼠感染模型为实验载体,探究花青素锦葵素3-葡萄糖苷(malvidin 3-glucoside, MG)能否用于缓解EPEC相关的病理表型。实验结果显示,补充MG可恢复鼠柠檬酸杆菌感染小鼠的体重丢失情况,并改善结肠隐窝长度与组织病理学评分。
