Helmeted Athena at The Palace of Versailles, France

This is one of the many marble sculptures decorating the gardens of the Palace of Versailles. This particular piece by Nicolas Poussin (1594-1665) depicts a woman, believed to be Athena or Minerva, identified by her heavy armour helmet and clothing. In her left hand she holds an olive branch and a snake coils around her body. In was completed in 1656 for the Grande Commande in 1674. This object is part of Scan The World.
