The aim of our study was to determine the distribution and genetic basis of trimethoprim resistance in Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae isolates in the United Kingdom (UK). Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae causes porcine pleuropneumonia, resulting in substantial economic losses in the swine industry worldwide. Whole-genome sequencing, followed by plasmid isolation and confirmatory sequencing, was used to identify the genetic basis of trimethoprim resistance in UK isolates of A. pleuropneumoniae, leading to discovery of two distinct plasmids encoding dfrA14. The identification of dfrA14 conferring trimethoprim resistance in A. pleuropneumoniae isolates will facilitate PCR screens for resistance to this important antimicrobial.
