Acetate is the most important precursor to CH4 and/or CO2 in anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR) treating organic solid waste. However, the identity and diversity of the anaerobic acetate utilizers are largely unknown, due to their potentially slow growth rate and low abundance. Here, we identified the actively acetate-assimilating microorganisms by high-sensitivity rRNA-stable isotope probing.
