The fungal strains were grouped according to their habitats: wood (FW), soil (SF), rice straw (FR), fruits (FF), oil environment (FL), hot springs (FH), insects (Fi), shrimp shell (Fsh) and crab shell (FC). The reductionist approach is described in the DNA isolation and ITS sequencing subsection of the Materials and Methods section.
