Behavioural observations, bioassays and chemical analysis pertaining to the mating behaviour of cockroaches, taking into account female-sex-hormone cross-contamination of males that can occur in aggregations such social species
This dataset contains measurements relating to courtship behaviour of the German cockroach, Blattella germanica, under differing amounts of the sex pheromone found in the female's cuticular lipids. Behavoural observations measured the number of mating events across different times of the day; bioassays measured whether sensory adaptation and central nervous system habituation result in diminished behavioural responses; chemical analysis measured the accumulation of cuticular hydrocarbons (CHCs) on cockroaches that had been allowed to groom versus those that had not.
The dataset is a single .xlsx file comprising the following 9 tabs:- Fig1B: Distribution of mating events of 65 pairs of cockroaches over the photocycle. (These data generate Figure 1B in the associated manuscript)- Fig1C: Locomotor activity of individual males and grooming frequencies of different body parts. (These data generate Figure 1C in the associated manuscript)- Fig3A: Amount of CHCs in scotophase and photophase extracted from antennae and the rest of the body. (These data generate Figure 3A in the associated manuscript)- Fig2: Amounts of CHCs on males prevented from grooming. (These data generate Figure 2 in the associated manuscript)- Fig3B: Amount of CHCs on different body parts. (These data generate Figure 3B in the associated manuscript)- Fig4: Context of the wing-raising (WR) display of males. (These data generate Figure 4 in the associated manuscript)- Fig5: Percentage courtship response (WR) of intact males to male- and female-contaminated male antennae. (These data generate Figure 5 in the associated manuscript)- Fig6A and B: Courtship performance of treated males in response to an intact female antenna. (These data generate Figure 6 in the associated manuscript)- Fig7A and B: Courtship performance of males with one groomed and one non-groomed antenna in response to an intact female antenna. (These data generate Figure 7 in the associated manuscript)
The related manuscript hypothesised that living in aggregations could cause sex pheromones in the females to be disseminated across group members by contact, and that this might interfere with sex discrimination and disrupt courtship.
