The personnel service cards record the name of the employee, date of birth, date of employment, employment type, file/serial numbers, notations, position (e.g. seaman), plant (e.g. tug), salary details, superannuation details (unit, quantity, amount, total and age) and also the date employment ceased by death, retirement, retrenchment or resignation. Information is recorded on both sides of the cards.The Dredge Service operated primarily from Newcastle c.1875 until the last dredge was sold in 1976/78. Many NSW rivers were subject to siltation, flooding, and bars at their entrances. The dredges were employed to keep the river entrances open for coastal shipping, punts and flood mitigation.
