Scenario workshop transcripts

This research formed part of the Agrisys Tanzania project that aimed to quantify how and to what extent integrated landscape management can enhance benefits to and from agriculture. Nine participatory workshops involving 80 smallholder farmers were conducted between July and August 2022. Workshops comprised 38 women and 42 men. Workshops were differentiated by age and wellbeing. There were two workshops for youth (18-35) (n=20) and seven workshops for adults (35+) (n=60).

Each workshop was run for approximately six hours and consisted of two main activities. In activity 1 participants described their current farming system and then they created a scenario of their ideal farming system, looking 5-10 years into the future. Participants were free to describe as they wished, but they usually included details such as the size, configuration, and the main characteristics such as crops, trees, rivers, and wells. They also described their surrounding landscape, this was defined by the participants themselves but usually referred to the nearby surroundings of the farm. Activity 2 then explored the barriers and opportunities they face in achieving their ideal farming scenario. Workshops were of mixed gender, but groups were divided into male and female for each activity and then came together for plenaries, allowing an exchange of ideas and discussion between genders.

The workshops took place in Swahili and were hosted by a Tanzanian facilitator, two research assistants and two artists. The artists depicted the ideal farm for each participant so that they could visualise, explain and compare their scenario with the broader group.
