Gesäuse National Park — a rugged wilderness

200 years ago, the natural beauty of the Gesäuse region, the contrast between the river Enns and the sheer rock faces of Gesäuse mountains with their diverse habitats and species, already attracted researchers and mountaineers to this area in the heart of Austria. As early as 1958, the Gesäuse and the valley of the river Enns leading out of it were designated as the first conservation area in Styria. Persisting plans for hydroelectric power generation on the Enns eventually led to the creation of a national park in 2002.两百年前，格绍（Gesäuse）地区的自然风貌便已极具吸引力：恩斯河（Enns）与格绍山脉的陡峭岩壁形成鲜明反差，加之此地多样的栖息环境与物种，早已引得研究者与登山者前往这片位于奥地利腹地的区域。早在1958年，格绍地区及由此延伸的恩斯河谷便被指定为施蒂利亚州（Styria）首个自然保护区。针对恩斯河的水力发电开发计划长期存在，最终在2002年促成了这座国家公园的设立。
