Assessing the Effect of Beat Gestures on the Perception of Lexical Stress in Full Spanish Sentences

The stimuli and data in this repository were created in the context of a study on the use of beat gestures (in this case: short, biphasic hand movements used for emphasis) on the perception of lexical stress in Spanish. Specifically, we investigated whether these gestures could differentiate between the perception of members of Spanish word pairs like 'inVIto' vs. 'inviTÓ', independent of acoustic differences in the speech, and when those words were embedded in full sentence structures, making the current study a better representation of naturalistic language use compared to previous studies.

The repository contains the stimuli and data from both the Audio Only pretest of the materials, as well as the Audiovisual main test. The data are accompanied by R scripts that contain the code for analyzing and visualizing this data.
