In November 1997, St. Louis District personnel contacted the Guam Army National Guard (GUARNG) Headquarters to research archaeological and historic buildings survey work conducted on National Guard facilities in the territory. This document reports the history of cultural investigations on federally owned or federally supported GUARNG facilities, lists archaeological sites and historic buildings recorded within facility boundaries, and discusses historic contexts and predictive models. To date, no GUARNG sponsored cultural resources projects have been conducted on the five facilities included in this project: Fort Juan Muna, Barrigada Field Training Office (FTO), The Adjutant General’s Office, Multi-Purpose Range, and Naval Radio Transmitting Facility (NRTF) Barrigada. Of these facilities, two, Barrigada FTO and the Multi-Purpose Range, are tenants on U.S. Navy installations, indicating that cultural resources responsibilities lie with the U.S. Navy. Additionally, NRTF Barrigada is a U.S. Navy installation, a portion of which is potentially to be transferred to GUARNG. One cultural resources survey has been conducted by the Navy on NRTF Barrigada and three historic sites were recorded. However, it is unclear if these sites are located on the portion to be transferred to GUARNG. Because of this uncertainty, this Navy project was included in this document. Two of the sites were determined to be potentially eligible to the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). No properties located on the aforementioned five facilities are listed on the NRHP. The extent, nature, and location of archaeological collections recovered from work conducted on GUARNG facilities will be determined in the second phase of this project, to be completed during Fiscal Year 1999.
