Diana and a Doe

Artemis, the Greek goddess of hunting and twin sister to Apollo, is shown here in action, with her tunic (the chiton) tucked up to her knees to make it easier to pursue her quarry. A cape (the himation) passing over her left shoulder, clings closely to her form. The rhythmic, Classical yet naturalistic draperies, and the goddess's rather aloof majesty, allow us to date the original statue - now lost - to the second Classical period of the fourth century BC.阿尔忒弥斯（Artemis）是希腊神话中执掌狩猎的女神，亦是阿波罗的孪生姊妹。本作品展现了她狩猎时的身姿：她将身上的束腰外衣（希顿长袍，chiton）向上束至膝盖，以便于追逐猎物。一条披肩（希马申外袍，himation）搭在左肩，紧密贴合她的身形。作品中富有韵律感的古典写实褶皱衣饰，以及女神略带疏离感的端庄威仪，让我们得以将这件现已佚失的原作的创作年代，定为公元前4世纪的第二古典时期。
