Monitor Marine Sanctuary : an archaeological and engineering assessment : operations manual

On January 30, 1975, the Secretary of Commerce designated as a Marine Sanctuary an area of the Atlantic Ocean around and above the submerged wreckage of the Civil War ironclad U.S.S. MONITOR pursuant to the authority of the Marine Protection, Research and Sanctuaries Act of 1972. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Office of Coastal Zone Management and Harbor Branch Foundation, Inc., have agreed to undertake a cooperative project, with the participation of North Carolina, at the MONITOR Marine Sanctuary to achieve the following objectives: Establish permanent datum control points; Conduct a test excavation; Photograph portions of the wreck; Undertake an attitude analysis of the hull structure; Conduct structural testing of structural components of the wreck.
