Witnessed Meteorite Falls (1688-2013): 1,097 Observed Arrivals from Space
When a meteorite is seen falling and then recovered, scientists get pristine extraterrestrial material uncontaminated by weathering. These 1,097 witnessed falls represent the gold standard of meteoritics. Unlike finds, witnessed falls provide fresh material, precise timing for orbit reconstruction, and trajectory data. Spans 325 years from 1688 Bovedy to 2013 Chelyabinsk. Only 2.9% of all known meteorites but disproportionately advance planetary science. Source: NASA Meteoritical Bulletin.
