The analyses of the data are published in the following article: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.gecco.2026.e04160Study descriptionIn this paper, we studied whether typical species of a semiarid grassland differ in their root mass fractions and if these species respond similarly to the between-year differences in precipitation with respect to root mass fraction.We also investigated the effect of four years of chronic precipitation manipulation (water addition, ambient precipitation, moderate drought, severe drought) on community-level root mass fraction.To assess whether drought-induced shift in species composition alone can explain changes in community-level root mass fraction, we compared the realised community-level root mass fraction of the experimental plots with the community weighted mean of species-specific root mass fractions, based on individuals sampled from ambient conditions.File Descriptionscom_plot_19.JUN.csv file stores community-level aboveground and belowground plant biomass data measured in the experimental plots.speciesRMF.csv contains aboveground and belowground biomass data of species. Based on individuals growing under ambient conditions.sps_plot_19.JUN.csv stores the cover of species (i.e., species that were measured for species-specific root mass fraction) in the experimental plots.
