Nitrous oxide producing fungi isolated from salt marsh sediment

Nitrous oxide is an ozone depleting greenhouse gas produced by microorganisms in salt marsh sediments using bioavailable nitrogen. Due to anthropogenic nitrogen inputs, we have seen a dramatic increase in nitrous oxide from salt marshes. To predict the response of nitrous oxide from human induced environmental changes, we must understand how different parts of the microbial community contribute to nitrous oxide cycling. This study examines the potential role of fungi in nitrous oxide production in salt marsh sediments. We isolated N2O producing fungi from salt marsh sediments capable of growth under sulfidic conditions.
