Waste items found along beaches in the U.S. 2023, by type and state

Approximately 134,600 volunteers across the United States took part in the 2023 International Coastal Clean Up day, collecting over 2.3 million pounds of trash along 15,341 kilometers of U.S. coastline. Many of the items collected were plastics, such as food packaging, bottles, straws, bags, and cigarette butts. The most trash was collected along the coasts of Florida and California. A large number of plastic bottles littered the beaches in these states, with 63,088 collected in Florida, and 24,147 in California. The most common item of trash collected along the U.S. coastline was cigarette butts.
