Coregonus sp. 'balchen' genome assembly - De-Kayne, Zoller and Feulner

The Alpine whitefish radiation is a particularly interesting system in which to study the genetic basis of adaptation and speciation as well as the consequences of whole genome duplication. We carried out ~90x coverage PacBio sequencing (and Illumina sequencing for polishing) from one wild caught C. sp. 'balchen' from Lake Thun, one representative of the Alpine whitefish radiation, and carried out genome assembly using three assemblers , Falcon, Canu and wtdbg2. We concluded that the best assembly was assembled using wtdbg2 and included 40 chromosome-scale scaffolds.
