Prints and Photographs Collection Publication: Academy for Educational Development, 1987 Language(s): English Format: Still image Subject(s): HIV Public Health Genre(s): Archival Materials Posters Slides (photographs) Abstract: AIDSCOM, designed to provide technical support exclusively to developing countries, began as a 24 million dollar, 6-year project of the U.S. Agency for International Development awarded to the Academy for Educational Development in late 1987. While education was a main objective, this poster reflects additional goals to strengthen local organizations and promote worldwide solidarity in the fight against HIV/AIDS through a commitment to prevention, the promotion of open international dialogue, and the development of communication technologies. In 1988, the same year that the World Health Organization announced the first World AIDS Day, this poster reflected the primary operating themes of AIDSCOM: people are at the center and partnerships are critical. The painted image of the continents filled with multi-colored faces from different cultures, along with the underlying text, elicits a message of solidarity and human rights..
